The reason behind why Instagram is now hiding likes
With our modern day society completely obsessed with validation from the people around us, Instagram has become one of the biggest social media platforms ever. “How many likes did you get” has become a hot conversation amongst Millennial’s and Gen Z, this however, is all set to change in the coming months.
Instagram has now decided to test hide likes in the US, Canada, Austrailia, Brazil, Ireland, Italy, Japan and New Zealand. But the big question in everyone’s mind is why?
All like counts will be hidden to followers, but users will still be able to see how many likes they receive on their own post only if they wish.
Instagram CEO Adam Mosseri shared that the idea behind hiding likes to other users is a step forward to make Instagram a safer place on the internet. This new update will take the pressure off a generation obsessed with social media and will hopefully make a positive impact on mental health.
With the like count being out of sight, it allows users not to worry about how many people liked their recent selfie or that cute dog pic they posted. It will also hopefully make people use the comment option more with their Instagram friends, providing the comment is a positive reaction, this will see Instagram become a lot more interactive than it has ever been before.
